The British royal family<\/a> has had a banner decade. Intentionally or not, the latest generation\u2019s charisma, combined with a steady stream of high-profile media events from the Queen\u2019s diamond jubilee<\/a> and the 2012 Olympics<\/a> to William and Kate\u2019s wedding<\/a> and their first, second, and third kid, has made the royal family more popular than ever<\/a>, partially suppressing the British public\u2019s rising tide of republican feeling. Prince Harry\u2019s<\/a> recent engagement to Suits<\/em><\/a> actress and activist Meghan Markle<\/a> has reinforced this process, foreshadowing a literal marriage of Hollywood<\/a> glitz and British royalty.<\/p>\n

The public has almost universally gushed over Markle since her relationship with and now engagement to Prince Harry was revealed, and it\u2019s not hard to see why. The fact that she\u2019s not only a \u201ccommoner\u201d but American \u2014 and a person of color at that \u2014 signifies the changing face of the British monarchy<\/a>. But most profiles have zeroed in on Markle\u2019s outspoken feminism, her criticism of the Trump administration<\/a>, and her humanitarian work for the UN<\/a> and the charity World Vision<\/a>. Pundits have also expressed their disappointment that she will have to curb her activist streak upon marrying into the family…<\/p>\n
