Montclair<\/a> artist\u2019s photo project delves into discussion<\/em><\/p>\n

Growing up in Montclair, Charles Williams<\/a> sometimes said his dad was Cuban.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not really true.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was younger, I looked a little bit towards Asian, then black, Hispanic. Growing up, we really didn\u2019t talk about race in my household, so I didn\u2019t really feel it was an issue. Until my friends, they would ask me, what are you?\u201d Williams said. \u201cYour mom\u2019s not black. You have a white name.\u201d<\/p>\n

His mom is black. She\u2019s from D.C.<\/a>, and his father is a white man from Florida<\/a>, with some Cuban in him.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018My dad does look Cuban,\u201d Williams said. So saying his father was Cuban was a way of ending the questions of what are you? and where are you from? \u201cYou kind of get sick of it, so you say something to let it go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, people talk about race. Williams is exploring it in his new photography project, \u201cMy Racial Identity<\/a>,\u201d that he started during his first year at Parsons School of Design<\/a>. Williams\u2019 photography can be seen at charleswilliams.work<\/a>…<\/p>\n
