Online, it\u2019s a different story.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I was about 11 years old when I started to think I wasn\u2019t like the other Latina girls.<\/p>\n<p>The summer before sixth grade, my mother put me in a beauty pageant sponsored by a Hispanic community organization in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syracuse,_New_York\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Syracuse, N.Y.<\/a>, where we lived. The stage wasn\u2019t fancy \u2014 it was in a gymnasium on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Side_(Manhattan)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Side<\/a>, one of the poorest areas of the city. But there was a lot at stake. The winner would represent the pride of the community during the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puerto_Rican_Day_Parade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Puerto Rican Day Festival parade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I was mortified at the idea of competing. Aside from being a nerd with thick plastic glasses and a school marching band membership to match, I didn\u2019t look Latina.
