McInnes, co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vice_Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vice Media<\/a> and founder of the pro-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump<\/a> &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proud_Boys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proud Boys<\/a>,&#8221;<br \/>\n<em>( AP Photo )<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wnyc.org\/widgets\/ondemand_player\/wnycstudios\/#file=\/audio\/json\/889739\/&amp;share=1\" width=\"100%\" height=\"130\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gavin_McInnes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gavin McInnes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alt-right\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alt-right<\/a> leader and founder of the far-right group the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proud_Boys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proud Boys<\/a>, was invited to speak at the Metropolitan Republican Club on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Upper_East_Side\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manhattan&#8217;s Upper East Side<\/a> this past weekend. In advance of his appearance, McInnes promised to reenact the 1960 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inejiro_Asanuma#Assassination_and_legacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assassination of Japanese socialist Inejiro Asanuma<\/a>, posing in photos depicting ugly Asian caricatures.<\/p>\n<p>His presence drew crowds of both protesters and right-wing counter-protesters to the event, and <a href=\"http:\/\/gothamist.com\/2018\/10\/15\/proud_boys_nypd_arrest.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violence erupted late Friday night<\/a>. Several cell phone videos show groups of uniformed Proud Boys bragging about the assaults, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City_Police_Department\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYPD<\/a> released footage of a protester throwing a bottle at McInnes&#8217; supporters.<\/p>\n<p>The Proud Boys fit into an American tradition of far-right hate groups, but the Internet has enabled disparate groups from all across the country to find support in their message of &#8220;western chauvinism.&#8221; Also interestingly, the Proud Boys seem to have an ability to attract men of color, which seems at odds with groups that borrow heavily from a white supremacist ideology.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProfessorTKH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tanya Hern\u00e1ndez<\/a>, professor of law at Fordham University and the author of the <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">forthcoming<\/span> book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=55069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Multiracials and Civil Rights[: Mixed-Race Stories of Discrimination]<\/em><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DavidNeiwert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Neiwert<\/a>, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.versobooks.com\/books\/2535-alt-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump<\/em><\/a>, and correspondent for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern Poverty Law Center<\/a>, join the program to help make sense of this current phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to the story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnycstudios.org\/story\/gavin-mcinnes-and-proud-boys-misogyny-authoritarianism-and-rise-multiracial-white-supremacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.
