She thinks ballet\u2019s broken \u2013 and has a plan to fix it. The star of Disney\u2019s Nutcracker reboot<\/a> talks about racism, nude shoes and growing up bendy<\/em><\/p>\n

Ballet was definitely my escape,\u201d says Misty Copeland<\/a>. \u201cIt was the first thing I\u2019d ever experienced in my life that was mine \u2013 only mine, not my five other siblings\u2019. It gave me a voice, made me feel powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Copeland discovered ballet she was 13, living with her mother and siblings in a motel in California<\/a>. She was a shy, slight child who rarely spoke and tried not to be noticed. Twenty-three years later, hers is the kind of transformation story even ballet might think far-fetched. In 2015, she became the first black female principal dancer<\/a> at American Ballet Theatre<\/a> \u2013 and with that a spokesperson, poster girl, and bona fide star. Barack Obama<\/a> sought her out as an adviser, Prince<\/a> invited her on tour, Spike Lee<\/a> wants her in his films, and people queue up to meet her at the stage door of the Metropolitan Opera House<\/a> in New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And now the latest chapter in her real-life fairytale has begun to unfold. Copeland is dancing in Disney\u2019s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms<\/em><\/a>, a cinema revamp of the Christmas favourite starring Keira Knightley<\/a>, Helen Mirren<\/a> and Morgan Freeman<\/a>…<\/p>\n
