Now they\u2019re suing the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muscogee_(Creek)_Nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creek nation<\/a> to fully restore their citizenship<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Johnnie Mae Austin and her grandson, Damario Solomon-Simmons, can tell you everything about their ancestry. They can go back as far as 1810, the year Solomon-Simmons\u2019 great-great-great-great-grandfather, Cow Tom, was born. With undeniable pride, they recount the man\u2019s feats of bravery during the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">civil war<\/a>, and his leadership within <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oklahoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oklahoma\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muscogee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creek<\/a> population.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, they are so determined to let the world know exactly who Cow Tom was that they\u2019re suing the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muscogee_(Creek)_Nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creek nation<\/a> to make sure his descendants aren\u2019t forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>Solomon-Simmons and his grandmother are black, but they argue they\u2019re also Creek, and they\u2019re fighting to reclaim their identity&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Red the entire article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2018\/nov\/02\/black-americans-native-creek-nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Their ancestors were black slaves owned by Native Americans.
