A new $10 banknote featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viola_Desmond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Viola Desmond&#8217;s<\/a> portrait will go into circulation in a week, just over 72 years after she was ousted from the whites-only section of a movie theatre in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Glasgow,_Nova_Scotia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Glasgow, N.S.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The civil rights pioneer and businesswoman is the first Canadian woman to be featured on a regularly circulating banknote, which will also show a map of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_End,_Halifax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Halifax&#8217;s historic north end<\/a>, home to one of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada&#8217;s<\/a> oldest black communities and the site where Desmond opened her first salon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pcparty.ns.ca\/irvine-carvery1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Irvine Carvery<\/a>, a prominent member of Halifax&#8217;s north end and a former school board chair, said he&#8217;s excited that the bill will pay tribute to her, describing the inclusion of a black woman on the note as &#8220;a historic moment.&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/news\/new-10-bill-featuring-viola-desmond-goes-into-circulation-next-week-1.4173382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HALIFAX &#8212;
