Because of my job, I read a <em>lot<\/em> of news, then go on Twitter to read people\u2019s hot takes, then listen to podcasts, you know, just to round out the picture. It\u2019s extra, for sure. But while there\u2019s no question that my understanding of topics like foreign relations, economics and the president\u2019s taxes, to name a few, has gone from zero to at least 80 in the last few years, the overexposure has also distorted my perception about what \u201ceveryone\u201d knows.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately our readers keep me accountable. In my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/09\/style\/john-leguizamo-has-harsh-words-for-us.html?module=inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last column<\/a>, for example, I used the word \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latinx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latinx<\/a>\u201d as a broader term for the Latino community, to some people\u2019s perplexity&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpanglishKid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ed Morales<\/a>, a Columbia University professor who wrote \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=56927\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latinx: The New Force in American Politics and Culture<\/a>,\u201d agrees. In a recent conversation he said that \u201cthe X, which is so strange and is not Spanish, sort of marks this new hybrid idea.\u201d The title of his book, similarly, was meant to be forward-looking. \u201cI thought it was a futurist term,\u201d he said, \u201cimagining a future of more inclusion for people that don\u2019t conform to the various kinds of rigid identities that exist in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a>.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/21\/style\/latinx-queer-gender-nonconforming.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fortunately our readers keep me accountable.
