Segree Cuffee was born on Saturday, July 16, 1932 in the woodlands of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Varina,_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Varina<\/a>, in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henrico_County,_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henrico county, Virginia<\/a>. She was born in her grandmother&#8217;s house on her 140 acre farm, to Native American (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Powhatan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Powhatan<\/a>\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arrohattoc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arrohateck<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cherokee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cherokee<\/a>) and African-American parents.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother, Inez Selena Baugh was indigenous to that land and her father, James Bethea, was born in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cherokee,_North_Carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cherokee, North Carolina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shirley was her mothers second eldest daughter (first daughter, Thelma &#8220;Nuni&#8221; Baugh [deceased]); and the eldest of her parents three children together.
