Works like <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Three_Musketeers\" target=\"_blank\">The Three Musketeers<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Count_of_Monte_Cristo\" target=\"_blank\">The Count of Monte Cristo<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georges_(novel)\" target=\"_blank\">Georges<\/a><\/em> took me on countless adventures in worlds and times much different from my own. <strong>But there\u2019s a kinship I\u2019ve always felt with the author despite our differences in gender, nationality and history\u2014being of mixed race. Dumas was the grandson of a freed Haitian slave and a French nobleman.<\/strong> When describing his racial profile to a man who insulted him for being different he\u2019s reported to have said, \u201cMy father was a mulatto, my grandfather was a Negro, and my great-grandfather a monkey.
