The original members were runaway slaves who succeeded in becoming the first officially freed black slaves anywhere in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Americas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Americas<\/a>. Living in virtual isolation for more than 300 years, the Palenqueros have managed to retain their native ancestral culture, much of which originated in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sub-Saharan_Africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sub-Saharan Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo this day, they are phenotypically the darkest, most \u2018African\u2019 community in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin_America\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latin America<\/a>,\u201d says Schwegler, a UCI professor of Spanish &amp; Portuguese.<\/p>\n<p>A common misconception is that the slave trade was essentially a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_America\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North American<\/a> phenomenon. Actually, Latin America received 96 percent of all African slaves. In the 17th century, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cartagena,_Colombia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cartagena de Indias<\/a> \u2013 in Colombia \u2013 was the region\u2019s main slave market, and it was from this port city that the Palenqueros escaped to become <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maroon_(people)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maroons<\/a>.
