Monique Fields<\/a> remembers when she got inspiration for \u201cHoneysmoke<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was when her eldest daughter began asking questions about herself, namely about the color of her skin. They were questions that took her by surprise because Simone was only 3 years old.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe started asking questions about who she is, and I didn\u2019t really have any good answers for her,\u201d Fields said.<\/p>\n

It seemed early for her to be paying such close attention to things like that.<\/p>\n

\u201cBasically, she pointed to my face one day, and she said, \u2018Mommy\u2019s a black girl.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Yeah, Mommy\u2019s a black girl,\u2019 \u201d she said. \u201d(Then Simone) said, \u2018Simone is a white girl.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Fields, 48, admitted she really didn\u2019t know the best way to respond to that and told Simone, no, she was a black girl like Mommy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich is not true and was not the thing to do,\u201d she said. \u201cThen (Simone\u2019s dad) Ken said, \u2018You have a little bit of both worlds. You\u2019re a little bit of Mommy and a little bit of Daddy.\u2019…<\/p>\n
