Born to Protest: Legal Trailblazer Pauli Murray Takes Her Rightful Place in History<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

In On the Basis of Sex<\/em><\/a>, the forthcoming movie about Ruth Bader Ginsburg\u2019s<\/a> journey into law, RBG<\/a> (played by Felicity Jones<\/a>) holds a moot court<\/a> in her apartment to prepare for Moritz v. Commissioner<\/em><\/a>, her first big case and the beginning of her lifelong fight against sex discrimination. One of the moot court judges is Dr. Pauli Murray<\/a> (Sharon Washington<\/a>), an African American lawyer, activist, poet, and priest, who\u2019s wearing a truly terrific pink pantsuit. \u201cPauli would have been upset about that pink suit,\u201d Rosalind Rosenberg<\/a>, Professor of History Emerita at Barnard College, and Murray\u2019s biographer<\/a> tells me. In fact, \u201cPauli never visited Ginsberg\u2019s apartment and certainly did not serve on a moot court as a judge, but it\u2019s a biopic<\/a>, and I think it\u2019s a visually defensible way into the picture. But [as] a historian, if this was a documentary, I would\u2019ve protested because this never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was thrilled to see Murray in On the Basis of Sex<\/em>, even if the film rewrote some of history\u2019s details. (The movie\u2019s screenwriter is RBG\u2019s nephew, Daniel Stiepleman<\/a>, and a generous defense would suggest the inclusion is a tribute to those his aunt admired most.) I have been fascinated by Murray\u2019s life, career, and why she\u2019s been so overlooked and underknown since I stumbled across an article about her a few years ago. Anna Pauline \u201cPauli\u201d Murray was born into a mixed-race family in Baltimore<\/a> in 1910, orphaned<\/a> at the age of 3, adopted by her aunt, and raised in the Episcopal church in Durham, North Carolina<\/a>, before becoming an influential civil-rights lawyer. Despite her accomplishments, when I visited the movie\u2019s IMDb.com page<\/a>, I found neither Sharon Washington nor Murray\u2019s names listed. \u201cGuy #1\u201d and \u201cGuy #2,\u201d however, are…<\/p>\n
