\u201cIt\u2019s because you have foreign blood in you, that\u2019s why you live 350 miles from home,\u201d my uncle says to me. Noah*<\/sup> is sat next to me. Embarrassed, I look down into my dinner and mumble \u201cwell, what about my brother? He\u2019s always lived close by.\u201d I try and disrupt his logic. \u201cWell he\u2019s different, isn\u2019t he?\u201d My uncle carries on talking. I stop listening. I\u2019m angry. Why has no one interrupted him? Why is no one sticking up for me?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Easter Sunday<\/a>, 2018. I\u2019m at my parents\u2019 house for a family gathering with both sides of my family. My uncle is white. My dad is white. My mum is brown. I\u2019m mixed race. My mum was born in Mauritius<\/a>, she moved to the UK<\/a> when she was a baby in the \u201850s. My parents, who have been together since the \u201880s have never addressed the issue of race. I think they just wanted to keep their heads down in the hope that things would get better. Racist comments like those from my uncle are commonplace at my family gatherings.<\/p>\n

Noah is my partner. He\u2019s white. His family are racist too…<\/p>\n
