Photo courtesy of <em>The come Up Show.<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>At the 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/VH1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VH1<\/a> Mother\u2019s Day music tribute concert titled, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vh1.com\/dear-mama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Dear Mama: A Love Letter to Moms<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grammy nominated<\/a> singer and songwriter <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jhen\u00e9_Aiko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jhen\u00e9 Aiko<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zQr_kbNuDkg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recited this poem<\/a> she wrote for her mother, <a href=\"http:\/\/jheneaiko.wikia.com\/wiki\/Christina_Yamamoto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christina Yamamoto<\/a>, a woman of African American and Japanese ancestry:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI found another grey hair today but I was not bothered at all. I feel like I earned it. I\u2019m better, I\u2019m wiser, I\u2019m leveling up overall. I am becoming my mother, my beautiful mother, who taught me with age, comes might. I&#8217;m becoming my mother, my beautiful mother, she is love in the flesh, what a sight.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Afterwards, Aiko and her young daughter, Namiko Love, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S9ibNh16xfs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">serenaded the audience<\/a> with an original song Aiko wrote titled, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S9ibNh16xfs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Sing to Me<\/em><\/a>. The performance was a touching display of affection between three generations of women, and as such, offers an opportunity to reflect on the role Aiko\u2019s mother\u2019s racial heritage has played in Aiko\u2019s musical career. After all, she is her mother\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S9ibNh16xfs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jhen\u00e9 Aiko Chilombo was born in 1988 in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles<\/a> to Christina Yamamoto, a woman who is African American and Japanese, and <a href=\"http:\/\/jheneaiko.wikia.com\/wiki\/Karamo_Chilombo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karamo Chilombo<\/a>, a man of mixed-Black and Native American ancestry. Aiko is one of five siblings who grew up in a multiracial and tight-knit family from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ladera_Heights,_California\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ladera Heights<\/a>, a Black middle-class enclave in south Los Angeles. Aiko\u2019s sister, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mila_J\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mila J<\/a>, is a singer, songwriter, and dancer herself&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discovernikkei.org\/en\/journal\/2019\/1\/29\/jhene-aiko\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jhen\u00e9 Aiko is a part of a small but seemingly growing cohort of multiracial and multicultural performers who are embedded in African American and Latinx communities yet subtly, and sometimes not so subtly, remind audiences through their music, performance, and public personas that they are \u201cdifferent\u201d and thus unique. In the hyper-competitive music industry, being different is an asset, as 2 Chainz reminded us in 2012.
