The constant arrival of European males through immigration made this goal attainable. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domingo_Faustino_Sarmiento\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[Domingo] Sarmiento<\/a> often touted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mulatos<\/a> as proof of progress because they \u201chad the brute force of the African and the intellect of the European.\u201d<sup>5<\/sup> By the turn of the twentieth century, it seemed that the whitening project had achieved success. In 1905 <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juan_Jos\u00e9_de_Soiza_Reilly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juan Jos\u00e9 Soiza Reilly<\/a> wrote in the magazine <em>Caras y Caretas<\/em>, \u201cThe [black] race is losing in the mixture its primitive color. It becomes gray. It dissolves. It lightens.
