{"id":57542,"date":"2019-02-10T23:35:03","date_gmt":"2019-02-10T23:35:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=57542"},"modified":"2019-02-10T23:35:03","modified_gmt":"2019-02-10T23:35:03","slug":"bristol-school-drops-colston-name-and-replaces-it-with-african-american-female-mathematicians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=57542","title":{"rendered":"Bristol school drops Colston name and replaces it with African-American, female mathematician&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/bristol-school-drops-colston-name-2524328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Bristol school drops Colston name and replaces it with African-American, female mathematician&#8217;s<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Bristol Post<\/a><br \/>\nBristol, United Kingdom<br \/>\n2019-02-10<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TristanCorkPost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tristan Cork<\/strong><\/a>, Senior Reporter<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/bristol-school-drops-colston-name-2524328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk\/incoming\/article259586.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/1_Edward-Colston.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>An 18th century engraving of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Colston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Colston<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p><em>All the other house names have been dropped in favour of more diverse role models<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bristol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol\u2019s<\/a> oldest state schools has decided to ditch the names of its <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">houses<\/a> &#8211; including one named after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Colston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Colston<\/a> &#8211; in favour of more inspiring names who are better role models.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St_Mary_Redcliffe_and_Temple_School\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School<\/a> has a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">house system<\/a> with five houses, all named after historic figures from the school\u2019s, and Bristol\u2019s, past.<\/p>\n<p>That system has operated for decades, but from the start of the next academic year in September, they will be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>The school, which is the only <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_of_England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Church of England<\/a> secondary school in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diocese_of_Bristol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diocese of Bristol<\/a>, has come under pressure for its links to the controversial slave trader Edward Colston in recent years, and that included calls to rename one of the five school \u2018houses\u2019 which is named after him.<\/p>\n<p>The school groups students into five houses, from when they start in Year 7 to Year 11.<\/p>\n<p>Pupils start in James House in Year 7, before being split into four different houses until they take their <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Certificate_of_Secondary_Education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GCSEs<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<strong>Colston House will become Johnson House<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/bristol-school-drops-colston-name-2524328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk\/incoming\/article2524748.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/0_TCR_BRI_060219RedcliffeSchoolHouse2_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katherine_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><small>Katherine Johnson<\/small><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Edward Colston is one of the most prominent and divisive figures in Bristol\u2019s history. A Bristol-born merchant, he effectively ran the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_African_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Africa Company<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a>, before helping to open it up for Bristol.<\/p>\n<p>As well as a statue of him in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Centre,_Bristol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Centre<\/a>, there are roads, buildings, schools and homes named after him, with the use of his name across Bristol increasingly controversial.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katherine_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Katherine Johnson<\/a> was an African-American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics were critical to the success of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America\u2019s<\/a> first manned spaceflights.<\/p>\n<p>She effectively worked out how man could land on the moon during the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apollo missions<\/a>, and her calculations also were essential to the beginning of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_Shuttle_program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Space Shuttle programme<\/a>.
