Ulysses S. Grant<\/a>, was engaged to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/warrior\/content\/bio\/minnie.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnie Sackett<\/a>, a young white woman, in 1867. <em>(The History Collection\/Alamy) (The History Collection\/Alamy Stock Photo\/The History Collection\/Alamy Stock Photo)<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>When <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ely_S._Parker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ely Parker<\/a> married <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/warrior\/content\/bio\/minnie.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnie Sackett<\/a>, \u201cthe creme de la creme of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington<\/a> society\u201d came to gawk<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The wedding was a shock before it even began. In 1867, the nation\u2019s capital learned that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/warrior\/content\/bio\/minnie.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnie Sackett<\/a>, the daughter of a prominent <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Civil War<\/a> colonel, was engaged. Sackett was considered to be \u201cone of the most beautiful women in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">District<\/a>,\u201d according to the <em>New York Tribune<\/em>, with her high-neck lace collars and brunette ringlets piled atop her head.<\/p>\n<p>Her soon-to-be husband, 39-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ely_S._Parker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ely S. Parker<\/a>, had served in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Union_Army\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Union Army<\/a> as the private secretary to then-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ulysses_S._Grant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gen. Ulysses S. Grant<\/a>. It was Parker who drafted the terms of surrender that ended the war in 1865. So close was their friendship that Grant himself planned to escort the bride, whose father had died, down the aisle at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_of_the_Epiphany_(Washington,_D.C.)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington\u2019s Episcopal Church of the Epiphany<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Why was their betrothal controversial? \u201cIt may not be generally known that Col.
