But to the federal government the tribe exists largely in name only.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastern_Band_of_Cherokee_Indians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Smoky_Mountains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smokies<\/a>, the Lumbee have no reservation and no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caesars.com\/harrahs-cherokee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">glitzy casino<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Instead you might notice on a drive to the beach that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Route_74\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. 74<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robeson_County,_North_Carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robeson County<\/a>, Lumbee territory, is called <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/sTKYEoifKP52\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Indian Highway<\/a>. Lumbee tribal offices are housed in a turtle-shaped building in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pembroke,_North_Carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pembroke<\/a>, the heart of their community. A school that opened there in 1887 to train American Indian teachers is now UNC Pembroke.<\/p>\n<p>South of the highway, a state historical marker commemorates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdcr.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2018\/06\/26\/north-carolina-highway-historical-marker-commemorate-battle-hayes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battle of Hayes Pond<\/a>, in which armed Lumbees routed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ku_Klux_Klan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ku Klux Klan<\/a> members intent on intimidating them in 1958.<\/p>\n<p>Reader Elisabeth Wiener of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durham,_North_Carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Durham<\/a> wanted to know about the history of the Lumbees, their native territory and why they aren\u2019t a federally recognized tribe.
