I wondered: Is this cultural appropriation?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I grew up in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gateway_Cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">southeast Los Angeles<\/a>, the son of an African-American father and Mexican mother, and the concept of identity is a theme that has been central to my life and a thread that weaves through many of my stories. I heard a rumor that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lowrider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lowrider<\/a> culture \u2014 a community with an affinity for cars, outfit with intricate designs, multicolored lights and heavily tinted windows that can be traced in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_California\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern California<\/a> to as far back as the 1940s \u2014 had traveled to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Japan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan<\/a>.
