Overflow Crowd Attends Slover Lecture On Jefferson\u2019s Black Daughter<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

An overflow crowd was on hand Sunday, Jan. 27 at the Slover Library<\/a> in downtown Norfolk<\/a> to hear Dr. Catherine Kerrison<\/a> discuss her latest book, \u201cJefferson\u2019s Daughters: Three Sisters, White and Black, in A Young America<\/a>.\u201d Kerrison is an associate professor of history at Villanova University, where she teaches courses in colonial and revolutionary America and women\u2019s and gender history.<\/p>\n

The event was the second of three lectures in the Catherine Lee Brinkley Memorial Lecture Series being offered by the Slover Library to \u201ckeep the spirit of community discourse about current events alive and to celebrate recently published books of national note.\u201d It is being sponsored by Jane Batten<\/a>, who was in attendance, as was former Mayor Paul Fraim<\/a>, who heads the Slover Library Foundation.<\/p>\n

Kerrison\u2019s expert re-search and writing on Virginia\u2019s<\/a> Thomas Jefferson<\/a>, the primary writer of the Declaration of Independence<\/a>, and the third president of the United States<\/a>, may have added to the crowd\u2019s interest. Certainly, the sexual liaison between Jefferson and his enslaved companion Sally Hemings<\/a> has been a topic of discussion and controversy since the relationship was disclosed several years ago…<\/p>\n
