The presidential hopeful knew the comment was coming.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are African-Americans who don\u2019t think you\u2019re black enough, who don\u2019t think you\u2019ve had the required experience,\u201d said the white journalist, trailing off before he could define \u201cthe required experience.\u201d In a voiceover, he\u2019d already mentioned that the politician was \u201cnot a descendant of slaves,\u201d as if that fact automatically impugns black authenticity.<\/p>\n

The candidate gave a slight, weary smile and responded, \u201cI am rooted in the African-American community, but I\u2019m not defined by it. I am comfortable in my racial identity, but that\u2019s not all I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

That exchange is from a 2007 \u201c60 Minutes\u201d segment with Barack Obama<\/a>, the son of a Kenyan father and a white American mother. Now Senator Kamala Harris<\/a>, daughter of a Jamaican father and Tamil Indian mother, is being subjected to the same inane racial purity questions…<\/p>\n

There is no monolithic way to be black. Such attacks on Harris are idiotic when there are real and serious policy issues to be discussed. In America, blackness is demonized, but for black candidates it\u2019s also used as an arbitrary measure of realness versus pandering.
