And yet Drake&#8217;s own identity &#8211; his nationality, his mixed race background that includes Jewish heritage and upbringing, the neighbourhood he once lived in, the schools he went to &#8211; is often taken to mean that his black experience is somehow inauthentic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It feels ridiculous to have to say this: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drake_(musician)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drake<\/a> is black.<\/p>\n<p>Drake, born Aubrey Graham in a city where almost one in ten people are black, is black. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toronto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toronto\u2019s<\/a> greatest civic triumphalist since <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Jacobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jane Jacobs<\/a> is black.<\/p>\n<p>He is a black man as much as any other black man. And yet Drake\u2019s own identity \u2013 his nationality, his mixed race background that includes Jewish heritage and upbringing, the neighbourhood he once lived in, the schools he went to \u2013 is often taken to mean that his black experience is somehow inauthentic.
