Christopher Williams<\/strong><\/a>, Professor of English<br \/>\n<em>University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.popmatters.com\/164942-experiencing-racial-identities-passing-in-assassins-creed-liberation-2495801728.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/resize.rbl.ms\/simage\/https%3A%2F%2Fassets.rbl.ms%2F11756499%2Forigin.jpg\/1200%2C600\/TjrcDPs40q2VKmFf\/img.jpg\" width=\"550\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a recent issue of <em>Game Informer<\/em>, Matt Miller describes the addition of a new mechanic to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Assassin%27s_Creed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Assassin&#8217;s Creed<\/em><\/a> series that involves taking on what <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Ubisoft_subsidiaries#Ubisoft_Sofia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ubisoft Sofia<\/a> is calling \u201cpersonas\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Assassin%27s_Creed_III:_Liberation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Assassin&#8217;s Creed: Liberation<\/em><\/a>. Miller explains that the first female protagonist in an <em>Assassin&#8217;s Creed<\/em> game, <a href=\"https:\/\/assassinscreed.fandom.com\/wiki\/Aveline_de_Grandpr\u00e9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aveline<\/a>, is \u201ca woman of mixed race who also has access to significant financial resources,\u201d and as a result that the character will have \u201caccess to three personas as she wanders New Orleans [. . .] each represented by a change in abilities and clothing (\u201c10 Cool Features You Don&#8217;t Know about <em>Assasssin&#8217;s Creed III<\/em> . . . and 5 More from <em>Assassin&#8217;s Creed: Liberation<\/em>, <em>Game Informer<\/em>. November 2012. p. 97). Barring the persona of the assassin, the two other personas available to Aveline are \u201cthe lady persona,\u201d which consists of \u201cthe constraining dress of an affluent <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Orleans<\/a> woman\u201d that will limit \u201cher mobility [. . .], but she [will] gain the ability to charm her way past soldiers and other obstacles that would stand in her way.\u201d The final persona puts her in the guise of \u201ca local slave,\u201d which allows her to \u201cslip unnoticed past opponents or incite a riot with the local populace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fans of the series will probably immediately recognize that what has previously been a mechanic enacted in the <em>Assassin&#8217;s Creed<\/em> series by hiring groups of prostitutes, gypsies, mercenaries, and thieves in order to create distractions and throw off guards in this stealth series has now become a mechanic directly associated with the protagonist herself.
