(Photo courtesy of Kamala Harris)<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_on_drugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">war on drugs<\/a> had erupted, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apartheid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apartheid<\/a> was raging, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jesse_Jackson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesse Jackson<\/a> would soon make the campus a staging ground for his inaugural presidential bid. Running for student office in 1982 at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Howard_University\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Howard University<\/a> \u2014 the school that nurtured <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thurgood_Marshall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thurgood Marshall<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toni_Morrison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toni Morrison<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kwame_Ture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stokely Carmichael<\/a> \u2014 was no joke.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kamala_Harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sen. Kamala Harris<\/a> (D-Calif.) has been known to break the ice with voters by proclaiming the freshman-year campaign in which she won a seat on the Liberal Arts Student Council her toughest political race. Those who were at the university with her are not so sure she is kidding.<\/p>\n<p>It was at Howard that the senator\u2019s political identity began to take shape.
