{"id":58018,"date":"2019-05-04T20:05:05","date_gmt":"2019-05-04T20:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=58018"},"modified":"2019-05-04T20:05:05","modified_gmt":"2019-05-04T20:05:05","slug":"umaine-artist-explores-the-many-shades-of-colorism-in-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=58018","title":{"rendered":"UMaine artist explores the many shades of colorism in exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bangordailynews.com\/2018\/02\/12\/arts-culture\/umaine-artist-explores-the-many-shades-of-colorism-in-exhibit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>UMaine artist explores the many shades of colorism in exhibit<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bangordailynews.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bangor Daily News<\/a><br \/>\n2018-02-21<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/emily-burnham-7b1a1725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Emily Burnham<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bangordailynews.com\/2018\/02\/12\/arts-culture\/umaine-artist-explores-the-many-shades-of-colorism-in-exhibit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bdn-data.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2018\/02\/53173901_H22744106-600x338.jpg\" width=\"550\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until she moved away from her home state of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maine<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bangordailynews.com\/2017\/12\/06\/mainefocus\/white-maine-students-are-least-likely-in-nation-to-see-kids-of-another-race-at-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whitest state in the country<\/a>, that visual artist <a href=\"http:\/\/eleanorkipping.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eleanor Kipping<\/a> realized it isn\u2019t just her mixed race that affects the way she moves in the world \u2014 it\u2019s also her lighter skin tone.<\/p>\n<p>Discrimination toward people based on the shade of their skin, with favor given to fairer tones, is <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4512430\/colorism-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">known as colorism<\/a> \u2014 related to racism but often practiced within a specific community of people of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew that I was a person of color, but it was in exploring that that I discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Discrimination_based_on_skin_color\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">colorism<\/a> and my light skin in relation to that,\u201d said Kipping, 29, a native of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Town,_Maine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Town<\/a> now back in Maine as a graduate student in the Intermedia MFA program at the University of Maine&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;The images are mounted on frames, on the backside of which is brown paper.
