Original caption: &quot;Mulatte child of a German woman and a Negro of the French Rhineland garrison troops, among her German classmates\" width=\"550\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"660\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>This photo was used in genetics lectures at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany&#8217;s<\/a> State Academy for Race and Health <em>Library of Congress<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Film director <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amma_Asante\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amma Asante<\/a> came across an old photograph taken in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazi_Germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nazi Germany<\/a> of a black schoolgirl by chance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Standing among her white classmates, who stare straight into the camera, she enigmatically glances to the side.<\/p>\n<p>Curiosity about the photograph &#8211; who the girl was and what she was doing in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany<\/a> &#8211; set the award-winning film-maker off on a path that led to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Where_Hands_Touch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Where Hands Touch<\/em><\/a>, a new movie starring <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amandla_Stenberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amandla Stenberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_MacKay_(actor)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George MacKay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is an imagined account of a mixed-race teenager&#8217;s clandestine relationship with a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hitler_Youth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hitler Youth<\/a> member, but it is based on historical record&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<strong>Racist caricatures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The derogatory term &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhineland_Bastard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhineland bastards<\/a>&#8221; was coined in the 1920s to refer to the 600-800 mixed-race children who were the result of those relationships.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"450\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-48273570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1173D\/production\/_106958417_dsc03886.jpg\" alt=\"Newspaper cutting in the Frankfurter Volksblatt says &quot;600 Bastards Accused, the legacy of black crimes against the Rhinelanders&quot;\" width=\"450\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>The 1936 headline in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/sn90048697\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Frankfurter Volksblatt<\/em><\/a> says: &#8220;600 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhineland_Bastard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bastards<\/a> Accused, the legacy of black crimes against the Rhinelanders&#8221; <em>Robbie Aitken<\/em><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The term spoke to some people&#8217;s imagined fears of an impure race.
