It\u2019s a black-and-white image of a group of young ballerinas, boys and girls, their dark skin accented by bright tights and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tutu_(clothing)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tutus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey look so uncomfortable,\u201d Ms. Copeland said in a recent interview. \u201cIn ballet, we\u2019ve never been told there was a place for us to fit in. You can see that within this image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ctension and awkwardness\u201d that Ms. Copeland said she saw in the photo is familiar to her. She was the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Ballet_Theatre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Ballet Theater\u2019s<\/a> first black female principal dancer. Last month, when she visited <em>The Time<\/em>s to serve as a guest editor of a special print section <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/04\/12\/arts\/dance\/dance-photography-archives.html?module=inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">featuring dance images from our archives<\/a>, she saw those threads throughout dance history.<\/p>\n<p>The section is the latest from Past Tense, which highlights stories and photographs from <em>The Times\u2019s<\/em> archives. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/by\/veronica-chambers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veronica Chambers<\/a>, who leads the team, said that of the six million photos in the archives, at least 5,000 are dance-related.
