Courtesy the artist and Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago.<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.genevievegaignard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genevieve Gaignard\u2019s<\/a> first solo show \u201cBlack White and Red All Over\u201d is currently exhibited at the Monique Meloche Gallery in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago<\/a> from April 5th-May 24th. The exhibition showcases Gaignard\u2019s new body of mixed media artwork and a new site-specific installation. In this exhibition, the artist speaks on the intersecting representational issues of race, femininity and class in modern American society.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashley Yu: Why do you use photo collages of magazine cutouts as your medium of choice?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.genevievegaignard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genevieve Gaignard<\/a>: I wouldn\u2019t say this is my medium of choice per se. It\u2019s more that I\u2019m an artist that works in various mediums (photography, installation, sculpture and collage) in order to address the topics of gender, class and racial injustice in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America<\/a>. For me, it\u2019s very instinctual to work with magazine images. I grew up collaging my bedroom walls as a teenager. I feel like, in a way, I\u2019m taking from that memory and applying it to my practice&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<strong>Ashley: You often refer to the &#8220;invisibility&#8221; of growing up mixed-race in America. Would you explain that to us?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Genevieve: Sure.
