In fact, she hates being asked to choose.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There were only a handful of non-white children in my primary school, which did lead to certain issues in the playground,\u2019 Marie tells Metro.co.uk.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Whenever we pretended to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spice_Girls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spice Girls<\/a>, I always had to be <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mel_B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scary<\/a> because I was \u201cbrown\u201d \u2013 even though I was clearly the best <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victoria_Beckham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Posh<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018When I was a bit older I remember reading the poem \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=3964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Half-caste<\/a>\u201d by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Agard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Agard<\/a> in a class.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I clearly didn\u2019t understand the message as I was really pleased I had a name to identify myself with. I told my mum and she explained why it was a racist term, so I quickly switched to saying I was mixed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018That was the first time it occurred to me that being mixed could be controversial.
