What affinities, loves and thefts, and tensions are present in cultural forms such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anime<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jazz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jazz<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinese_martial_arts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kung fu<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/K-pop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">K-pop<\/a>? Students will consider the intersections and overlap between African and Asian diasporic cultures in global cities such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Havana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Havana<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lahore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lahore<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingston,_Jamaica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kingston<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hong_Kong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hong Kong<\/a> to ask the question: when did <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Africa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asia<\/a> first encounter each other? This will be contextualized through a political and historical lens of the formation of a proto-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Global_South\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global South<\/a> in the early twentieth, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afrofuturism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afro-futurism<\/a>, women of color feminisms, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Third_World\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Third World<\/a> solidarity and internationalism. Tackling issues of race, gender, sexuality, and resistance, this seminar also reckons with the intertwined legacies of the institutions of African enslavement and Asian indenture by reading the novels of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patricia_Powell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patricia Powell<\/a> and the paintings of <a href=\"https:\/\/kehindewiley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kehinde Wiley<\/a>, for instance.
