This stun\u00adning, com\u00adpul\u00adsive\u00adly read\u00adable debut mem\u00adoir tells the sto\u00adry of T Kira Madden\u2019s<\/a> com\u00ading-of-age in the swampy, sur\u00adre\u00adal world of wealthy Boca Raton, Flori\u00adda<\/a>. Despite her priv\u00adi\u00adlege wrought from her father\u2019s shady deal\u00adings in gam\u00adbling and stocks, young Mad\u00adden faced crip\u00adpling lone\u00adli\u00adness and inse\u00adcu\u00adri\u00adty. Her drug-addled par\u00adents were fre\u00adquent\u00adly neglect\u00adful, strung out to what Mad\u00adden calls \u200b\u201cthe oth\u00ader place.\u201d Though wealthy enough to attend prepara\u00adto\u00adry school and own four hors\u00ades, Mad\u00adden fed her\u00adself lit\u00adtle but canned soup as a child. Her father rarely spoke to her and called her \u200b\u201cson.\u201d It\u2019s no won\u00adder that despite his phys\u00adi\u00adcal pres\u00adence for sub\u00adstan\u00adtial por\u00adtions of her child\u00adhood, Mad\u00adden felt father\u00adless. As a teenag\u00ader, she fell into code\u00adpen\u00addent friend\u00adships with oth\u00ader \u200b\u201closers\u201d who lacked sol\u00adid parental sup\u00adport. They found a sense of con\u00adtrol in drugs, eat\u00ading dis\u00ador\u00adders, and sex, both enabling each oth\u00ader in tox\u00adic behav\u00adior and being a lov\u00ading family.<\/p>\n

It sounds like an aver\u00adage \u200b\u201cpoor lit\u00adtle rich girl\u201d sto\u00adry. But Long Live the Tribe of Father\u00adless Girls<\/em><\/a> is much more than that, tak\u00ading tropes and ren\u00adder\u00ading them with an undy\u00ading sense of com\u00adpas\u00adsion. The details of Madden\u2019s ear\u00adly mem\u00ado\u00adries are star\u00adtling\u00adly vivid in a way that sug\u00adgests she was in a per\u00adsis\u00adtent state of high alert, every pain etched in her brain for\u00adev\u00ader. But for every men\u00adtion of a ter\u00adri\u00adfy\u00ading drug over\u00addose or her father leav\u00ading her at a base\u00adball game, there are sto\u00adries of her mother\u2019s del\u00adi\u00adcate removal of lice from her daughter\u2019s hair or her father\u2019s ear\u00adly teach\u00ading of mag\u00adic tricks. Mad\u00adden loves her fam\u00adi\u00adly fierce\u00adly and in spite of it all, we nev\u00ader doubt their deep-down love for her…<\/p>\n
