I wanted to be able to write a family history that answered all my questions and filled in all the blanks, but all I got were different versions of the past and an incomplete, unfulfilling present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This revelatory admission comes near the close of Valentine\u2019s intriguing, if never entirely satisfying, memoir, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=58134\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">When I Was White<\/a>.\u201d But it could well have served as its opening \u2014 a warning to readers that neither a slick solution to the puzzle of racial identity nor a definitive unraveling of the specific mystery of Valentine\u2019s origins would be forthcoming.<\/p>\n<p>A former visiting assistant professor of creative writing at Northwestern University, Valentine grew up in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Hills_(Pennsylvania)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pittsburgh\u2019s North Hills suburbs<\/a>, the bright, athletic, dark-hued child of two white parents. To many observers, she was self-evidently of mixed racial heritage.
