Terry\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=58769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Black Card<\/em><\/a> is a fascinating meditation on race, with a head-nodding soundtrack that moves from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Funk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LP_record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LPs<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Punk_rock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">punk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compact_disc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guns_N'_Roses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guns N\u2019 Roses<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Outkast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Outkast<\/a>. The novel follows an unnamed protagonist, a college drop-out who works as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barista\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">barista<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richmond,_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richmond, Virginia<\/a>, and plays bass in a punk band. His bandmates are white, along with the majority of the punks he encounters at house parties and shows, but he\u2019s mixed-race, with a white mother and Black father.<\/p>\n<p>All his life he\u2019s been unsure of his Black identity due to his light skin tone and red hair, attributes that read to white people as \u201cracially ambiguous.\u201d His father tells him not to doubt his Blackness, yet this confirmation comes off more as a warning not to get too comfortable around white people, and, like most kids when receiving advice from a parent, he doesn\u2019t really take it to heart&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire interview <a href=\"https:\/\/electricliterature.com\/chris-l-terry-black-card-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chris L.
