That\u2019s what black folks called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Howard_University\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Howard University<\/a> in the early 1980s when Harris was a teenager considering her future.<\/p>\n<p>Harris, she would say later, was seeking an experience wholly different from what she had long known. She\u2019d attended majority-white schools her entire life \u2014 from elementary school in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berkeley,_California\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Berkeley, Calif.<\/a>, to high school in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montreal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montreal<\/a>. Her parents\u2019 professional lives and their personal story were bound up in majority-white institutions. Her father, an economist from Jamaica, was teaching at Stanford University. Her mother, a cancer researcher from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">India<\/a>, had done her graduate work at the University of California at Berkeley, where the couple had met and fallen in love.
