Nor will the 31-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soprano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soprano\u2019s<\/a> direct delivery of transparent tones in the world premiere of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Adams_(composer)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Adams\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Girls_of_the_Golden_West_(opera)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Girls of the Golden West<\/em><\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco_Opera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco Opera<\/a> production, hint at the fragile ego and self-doubt she\u2019s worked hard to overcome.<\/p>\n<p>The assumption will be made \u2014 even with keen scrutiny and by kindred spirits \u2014 that Bullock\u2019s inner engine runs with conscious, creative intensity and is engineered with resilient intellect and the agile instincts of the tap dancer she, during her childhood in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Louis_Missouri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Louis, Missouri<\/a>, trained to become.<\/p>\n<p>And every part of all of that \u2014 the not so obvious and the apparent \u2014 will be true&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;In her role as Dame Shirley, she portrays a real life historical character; a white, educated woman who emerged from the Victorian era and was \u201cstripped of privilege\u201d as she moved across the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco<\/a>. Working from archives that primarily include letters written by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louise_Clappe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louise Clappe<\/a> (the real name of Dame Shirley), Bullock, as a mixed race 21st-century woman who identifies herself as, \u201chalf-white, half-black,\u201d finds points of access. \u201cShirley [in her letters] shows she communicated with individuals for whom she had no reference points. She was a careful and sensitive observer of the world. She wrote about it with the most sophisticated words she could provide. Her wit has carried me through, kept me from getting pulled down.
