W. Norton &amp; Company, pp.192, $25.95<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018I have observed,\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Addison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joseph Addison<\/a> wrote in 1711 in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.scc.rutgers.edu\/spectator\/text\/march1711\/no1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first article<\/a> in the first issue of the first version of <em>The Spectator<\/em>, \u2018that a Reader seldom peruses a Book with Pleasure, \u2019till he knows whether the Writer of it be a black or a fair Man, of a mild or cholerick Disposition, Married or a Batchelor, with other Particulars of the like nature, that conduce very much to the right understanding of an Author.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thomaschattwill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Chatterton Williams<\/a> has earned a reputation as a tough, thoughtful and genuinely interesting commentator on race. In an influential 2015 essay in the <em>London Review of Books<\/em>, he criticized <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ta-Nehisi_Coates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ta-Nehisi Coates<\/a> for discounting the individual autonomy of black Americans. In a 2017 op-ed for the <em>New York Times<\/em> he argued that the essentialism of leftist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Identity_politics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identity politics<\/a> is dangerously similar to that of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_nationalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">white nationalism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Williams\u2019s first book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=39188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Losing My Cool: Love, Literature, and a Black Man\u2019s Escape from the Crowd<\/em><\/a> (2010), was a memoir of growing up as the son of a white mother and a black father from the segregated South.
