She is East Indian and Greek, but her parents were born in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a>. \u201cI can\u2019t speak for immigrants.\u201d She weighs the considerations, then adds, \u201cBut my skin color is Brown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meiko Flynn-Do is Japanese, Vietnamese, and White but before attending Stanford University, where mixed-race students made up 11% of undergraduates in 2012, she never saw herself as a \u201cperson of color. That wasn\u2019t on my radar.\u201d It wasn\u2019t until college that she started \u201cwrestling with those things. Ethnic studies classes kind of opened up those questions for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mariko Rooks attended Yale University\u2019s Cultural Connections, a pre-orientation program for minorities, prior to starting her first year on campus. \u201cIt was so unapologetically Black and Brown,\u201d she recalls. \u201cSo overwhelming and enlightening.\u201d The experience \u201crevolutionized her thinking,\u201d says Rooks. Her friend Adia Klein, a junior at Yale agrees. \u201cGoing to college opened me up. I saw that being multiracial was a global thing\u2026 It was eye-opening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like many college students, Vlahoplus, Flynn-Do, Rooks, and Klein all found that in college, questions of racial identity moved to the front and center of their consciousness for the first time&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;\u201cIt\u2019s really hard for administrations to catch up,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soc.ucsb.edu\/faculty\/g-reginald-daniel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">G. Reginald Daniel<\/a>, PhD, professor and vice chair in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
