Set in the 1980s, ABC\u2019s mixed-ish<\/em><\/a>, the newest black-ish<\/em><\/a> spin-off, tells the story of Dr. Rainbow \u201cBow\u201d Johnson\u2019s (Arica Himmel<\/a>) experience growing up biracial. The Johnson family \u2014 white father Paul (Mark-Paul Gosselaar<\/a>), Black mother Alicia (Tika Sumpter<\/a>), Bow and her siblings Johan (Ethan William Childress<\/a>) and Santamonica (Mykal-Michelle Harris<\/a>) \u2014 are also former members of a \u201chippy\u201d commune<\/a>, where presumably, neither race nor racism existed.<\/p>\n

The show\u2019s premise is that being forced into the \u201creal world,\u201d where race and racism do exist, is a major source of culture shock that the entire family must now navigate.<\/p>\n

As a Black multiracial woman who doesn\u2019t have a white parent, I\u2019m tired of portrayals of mixedness that mock Blackness, portray multiraciality and interracial marriages as the more \u201crighteous\u201d path, and ignore experiences that don\u2019t fit into POC<\/a>\/white binaries.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, mixed-ish<\/em> embodies all this and more…<\/p>\n
