Certainly, it was and is controversial.<\/p>\n<p>In years, decades, and centuries past, a number of light-skinned African Americans \u201cpassed,\u201d either briefly, permanently, or situationally. Their stories are legion. This certainly has been the case for several members of my own family&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;But there are alternative stories too. In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=4781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Crow South<\/a>, my <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adella_Hunt_Logan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">light-skinned grandmother<\/a> sometimes wore a raceless mask to attend \u201call-white\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suffrage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suffrage<\/a> conferences in the pre-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nineteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nineteenth Amendment<\/a> years. Then she brought the information she gleaned back to share with her African American friends and peers who hoped to acquire the vote for women. On occasion, she also manipulated the racial apartheid system to acquire the best possible medical care for herself and her children.
