“The Latinos that are not dark-skinned don\u2019t call themselves White Latinos or Caucasian Latinos. I know that might sound controversial,” she admitted.<\/em><\/p>\n

Puerto Rican-American actress Rosie Perez<\/a> burst onto the Hollywood<\/a> scene thanks to Spike Lee\u2019s<\/a> Do The Right Thing<\/em><\/a> at a time when Tinsel Town wasn\u2019t necessarily rich with opportunities for people of color. And some decades later, Perez, who identifies as Afro-Latino<\/a>, still isn\u2019t shy when it comes to voicing her concern about the pervasive racism in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s very dangerous\u2014the separation of color within the Latin community,\u201d Perez told ESSENCE<\/em> last Saturday while receiving Hispanicize\u2019s<\/em> Latinavator Award<\/a> at The InterContinental in Los Angeles<\/a>. \u201c People who are dark skin have to pronounce themselves as Afro-Latinos. The Latinos that are not dark-skinned don\u2019t call themselves White Latinos or Caucasian Latinos. I know that might sound controversial, [but] I think it\u2019s important that we unify.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat said: there is a disparity in regards to seeing brown, dark brown and Black-skinned colored Latinas, Latinos, LatinX\u2014whatever\u2014it hasn\u2019t changed that much,\u201d she added…<\/p>\n
