LOS ANGELES<\/a> \u2014 When Bobby Webster<\/a> took the stage as a guest speaker at the U.S.-Japan Council\u2019s annual conference earlier this month, the moderator introduced him as a world champion and a hapa<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The first label was self-evident: Webster is the Toronto Raptors\u2019<\/a> general manager, a low-key strategic planner and salary cap specialist who reports to Masai Ujiri<\/a>, the organization\u2019s brash, larger-than-life president.<\/p>\n

The second term \u2014 a Hawaiian phrase that means \u201cpart\u201d and refers to people of mixed race \u2014 described Webster\u2019s Japanese-American background. Webster\u2019s mother, Jean, descended from Japanese immigrants who came to work in the stables at a Hawaiian sugar plantation around the turn of the 20th century.
