Black Britons Know Why Meghan Markle Wants Out<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the racism.<\/em><\/p>\n

The British press has succeeded in its apparent project of hounding Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex<\/a>, out of Britain<\/a>. The part it perhaps didn\u2019t bargain for, however, is the loss of Prince Harry<\/a> \u2014 a much loved Royal and a key part of the family\u2019s global brand \u2014 along with her.<\/p>\n

In a statement released this week, the couple said<\/a> they want to \u201ccarve out a progressive new role\u201d within the royal family<\/a> and will \u201cstep back as \u2018senior\u2019 members, and work to become financially independent.\u201d<\/p>\n

The British press<\/a> reacted with surprise at the \u201cshock move abroad<\/a>,\u201d described variously as \u201cseismic<\/a>,\u201d \u201cselfish<\/a>,\u201d \u201crogue<\/a>\u201d and \u201can atrocious lapse of judgment<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

If the media paid more attention to Britain\u2019s communities of color, perhaps it would find the announcement far less surprising. With a new prime minister whose track record includes overtly racist statements, some of which would make even Donald Trump<\/a> blush, a Brexit<\/a> project linked to native nationalism and a desire to rid Britain of large numbers of immigrants, and an ever thickening loom of imperial nostalgia, many of us are also thinking about moving…<\/p>\n
