William Isom, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackinappalachia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black in Appalachia Project<\/a>, discovered more about his ancestor\u2019s history while researching a slave cemetery in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia<\/a>.<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackinappalachia.org\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Isom II<\/a> had been searching for his great-great-grandfather, Kelson Isom, for 20 years. He finally broke through the brick wall as a result of his work with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackinappalachia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black in Appalachia Project<\/a>, researching a slave cemetery in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lee_County,_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lee County, Virginia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just so happened to find the record of my great-great-granddad as a slave in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scott_County,_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scott County, Virginia<\/a>,\u201d Isom said. \u201cHe was listed as property in a will. The slave owner had died and listed him and his brothers as property in the will. Once you can find the slave owner you can find other records. For me, that was one of the most amazing finds that benefited me personally.\u201d<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"350\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailytimes.com\/community\/black-in-appalachia-project-unearths-black-history\/article_d17ddc79-8157-59a8-87ff-7d1b64896fb2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com\/thedailytimes.com\/content\/tncms\/assets\/v3\/editorial\/8\/32\/83280524-e443-5e31-b48a-643ff0e1304c\/5e2ba46cc3323.image.jpg\" width=\"350\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackinappalachia.org\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Isom II<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackinappalachia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black in Appalachia Project<\/a>, will present a program at 7 p.m. Monday at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blounttn.org\/197\/Public-Library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blount County Public Library<\/a>.<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>At 7 p.m. Monday, Isom, director of community outreach for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.easttennesseepbs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">East Tennessee PBS<\/a> and director of Black in Appalachia, will speak about the project at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blounttn.org\/197\/Public-Library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blount County Public Library\u2019s<\/a> next program in its Southern Appalachian Studies Series.
