MIAMI<\/a> \u2014 The N.F.L.\u2019s<\/a> longtime leading men, the ones with the pizza commercials and the Super Bowl rings<\/a>, whose names adorn the league\u2019s most-sold jerseys, showed their mortality this season in ways that were uncomfortable to watch.<\/p>\n

Tom Brady<\/a> and Drew Brees<\/a> didn\u2019t make it through the first round of the playoffs. Aaron Rodgers<\/a> missed the Super Bowl<\/a>, too, by losing in a later round. Eli Manning<\/a> retired, usurped as the Giants\u2019<\/a> leader after 16 years. Ben Roethlisberger<\/a> played like he should be considering it, too.<\/p>\n

Together they helmed 12 of the last 18 Super Bowl-winning teams. And all are pushing 40 years old or past it.<\/p>\n

Yet their aging out of the game leaves no void, as these playoffs have highlighted the rise of quarterbacks<\/a> whose savvy and daring have stolen our attention. Russell Wilson\u2019s third-down scramble<\/a> to survive the Philadelphia Eagles<\/a>, Patrick Mahomes\u2019s bionic touchdown run<\/a> for the Chiefs<\/a> against the Tennessee Titans<\/a>, Deshaun Watson of the Texans\u2019 magical escape from a sack<\/a> to beat the Buffalo Bills<\/a>. Everything that Lamar Jackson<\/a> did…<\/p>\n
