Pinchback<\/a>, the first black man to serve as a governor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a>, in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louisiana<\/a>. But it would be a long time before he got justice.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Since 1851, many remarkable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/obituaries\/black-history-month-overlooked.html?module=inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black men and women<\/a> did not receive obituaries in <\/em>The New York Times<em>. This month, with Overlooked, we\u2019re adding their stories to our archives.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homer_Plessy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homer Plessy<\/a> boarded the East Louisiana Railway\u2019s No. 8 train in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Orleans<\/a> on June 7, 1892, he knew his journey to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Covington,_Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Covington, La.<\/a>, would be brief.<\/p>\n<p>He also knew it could have historic implications.<\/p>\n<p>Plessy was a racially mixed shoemaker who had agreed to take part in an act of civil disobedience orchestrated by a New Orleans civil rights organization.<\/p>\n<p>On that hot, sticky afternoon he walked into the Press Street Depot, purchased a first-class ticket and took a seat in the whites-only car&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/31\/obituaries\/homer-plessy-overlooked-black-history-month.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>He boarded a whites-only train car in New Orleans with the hope of getting the attention of the Supreme Court.
