Hall<\/a> joined local historic preservation supporters Tuesday afternoon in the <a href=\"https:\/\/parksandrec.cityofalexandriala.com\/content\/mini-fulton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexander Fulton Mini Park<\/a> downtown to unveil a historical marker in honor of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P._B._S._Pinchback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">P.B.S. Pinchback<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louisiana\u2019s<\/a> first African-American governor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is fitting that we honor P.B.S. Pinchback, the first African-American Governor of Louisiana, during <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_History_Month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black History Month<\/a>,\u201d Hall said. \u201cGov. Pinchback was a significant force in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louisiana<\/a> politics during <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction_era\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reconstruction<\/a> following the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Civil War<\/a>. The marker, located in the <a href=\"https:\/\/parksandrec.cityofalexandriala.com\/content\/mini-fulton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexander Fulton Mini Park<\/a> in downtown <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexandria,_Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexandria<\/a>, is the first one erected as part of the City of Alexandria\u2019s new historical marker program designed to recognize historical events and people associated with Alexandria.<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback was born in 1837 in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georgia_(U.S._state)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia<\/a> to a white father, who was a planter, and a black mother who was a former slave. While he could have tried to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pass for white<\/a>, Pinchback embraced his African-American roots. During the Civil War and after the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capture_of_New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fall of New Orleans<\/a>, Pinchback recruited the first set of African-American volunteer soldiers for the Union Army in Louisiana known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1st_Louisiana_Native_Guard_(United_States)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1st Louisiana Native Guards<\/a>, and he served as its first Captain&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kalb.com\/content\/news\/City-of-Alexandria-unveils-marker-to-Louisianas-first-African-American-governor-568180051.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ALEXANDRIA, La.
