Now, his intricate works on paper take the scalpel to society.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fridmangallery.com\/nate-lewis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The artist Nate Lewis<\/a> left his job as a nurse three years ago, but life on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neurointensive_care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neurocritical intensive care<\/a> unit produces memories that don\u2019t readily fade.<\/p>\n<p>The patients battling strokes, seizures, and head injuries. The specialists debating treatment based on test numbers and images. The anxious families keeping watch, looking to the nurse for explanation and reassurance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would show up and these families are giving me everything, telling me their life stories,\u201d Mr. Lewis, 34, recalled of his years at a hospital near <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington, D.C.<\/a> \u201cI realized what an honor it was to take care of them at this time in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One high-stakes drill became familiar: When a patient\u2019s brain, heart or lung functions exceeded the safe range, an alarm would sound, and the monitor would start printing out the relevant graph until the situation was addressed&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;A self-described jock, Mr. Lewis grew up obsessed with basketball, boxed a little and practices <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capoeira\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">capoeira<\/a>. He implicates his own body in his work, making self-portraits by the same method as portraits of his friends.<\/p>\n<p>They are black, as is he \u2014 he grew up in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pennsylvania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pennsylvania<\/a>, the son of a mixed-race couple \u2014 and he fielded some criticism at first, he said, for seeming to mutilate black bodies.
