(JTA) \u2014 As Enzi Tanner<\/a> participated in an online havdalah<\/a> ceremony marking the end of Shabbat<\/a> Saturday night, his city \u2014 Minneapolis<\/a> \u2014 was being torn apart during a fifth night of unrest following the death of George Floyd<\/a>, a black man, in police custody there last week.<\/p>\n

Tanner, a social worker who supports LGBT<\/a> families experiencing homelessness, said the ceremony \u2014 hosted by Jewish Community Action<\/a>, a local social justice group, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice<\/a>, a national organization and Edot Midwest Regional Jewish Diversity Collaborative<\/a> \u2014 conveyed a powerful message for black Jews like him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the Jewish community reaches in and says how do we support their cause and how do we support the black community, it\u2019s really important that people reach in to black Jews and other Jews of color and realize that we\u2019re here,\u201d Tanner said. \u201cAnd we need our community.\u201d<\/p>\n
