He is the only African-American driver in NASCAR\u2019s top-flight racing series<\/a>, and this week got the organization to bar the Confederate flag<\/a> at its events.<\/em><\/p>\n

Bubba Wallace<\/a>, who instigated NASCAR\u2019s banning of the Confederate flag<\/a>, is the racing series\u2019 only black driver. That has put him in the spotlight in a sport whose owners, drivers, crews and fans have historically been predominantly white.<\/p>\n

What is the history of black drivers in NASCAR<\/a>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wendell Scott<\/a> was the pioneer, driving on the circuit from 1961 to 1973. Despite regularly facing discrimination, he won a race in 1963 in Jacksonville, Fla.<\/a>, that remains the only one at NASCAR\u2019s top level to be won by an African-American driver. Scott died in 1990.<\/p>\n

Although a handful of African-American drivers got into a race or two over the years since, no other black driver had a full-time ride in NASCAR\u2019s top series until Wallace…<\/p>\n
